Facebook acquires company that verifies government IDs

Identity Inc. has been in operation for around three years and has created software that quickly - and pretty easily - confirms the Government ID of a particular person. Confirm.io's team and technology based in Boston are expected to shut down as they are rolled into Facebook for a new challenge in identity verification services.

The startup writes, "When we launched Confirm, our mission was to become the market's trusted identity origination platform for which other multifactor verification services can build upon". In the meantime, the company says it will be winding down its current authentication software offerings. The acquisition will take three years to integrate this technology with Facebook to keep its users safe.

Based in Boston, Confirm was founded back in 2015 and has raised $4 million in funding. Facebook has lately taken noteworthy biometric measures in its efforts to verify users' identities, including facial recognition systems aimed at authenticating suspicious accounts and notifying users' when their images are uploaded to Facebook by others. It is used by a number of Fortune 50 companies including financial institutions, healthcare providers, insurance carriers, retailers, shared economy companies and on demand service providers. There, Confirm.io's products could have myriad applications - like helping users who've been locked out of accounts verify their identity. Reuters noted that Facebook's acquisition of Confirm is "a step that may help the social media company learn more about the people who buy ads on its network".

Terms of the deal and how Facebook would apply Confirm's software were not immediately known. Facebook has as much as 6 million different advertisers, and buying ads on the platform mostly requires a Facebook page and a credit card. "Their technology and expertise will support our ongoing efforts to keep our community safe".

Facebook is happy to onboard a company that could prove invaluable in the coming months: "We are excited to welcome the Confirm team to Facebook".
