Before we break down the developments leaking this week, let's recap who Venom is, why Marvel wants him in the cinematic universe now, and where he'll likely fall in line among other comic book characters.

When it was announced that a movie based on Marvel Comics' anti-hero Venom was on its way, the initial fan reaction was mixed, to say the least.

The Venom Symbiote originally tries to combine itself with Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, but when Parker rejects it, it crawls to another journalist in New York City, a guy named Eddie Brock.

Parks and Recreation alum Jenny Slate is in talks to join Tom Hardy in Sony's Venom film.

According to Variety, sources say the actress is now in talks to play a scientist in the upcoming film, and would join Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Riz Ahmed and Manchester by the Sea's Oscar nominee Michelle Williams, who both said to be on board for unrevealed roles. Tom Hardy starrer Venom movie will hit the theatres on October 5, 2018.

Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing the movie with Amy Pascal. But it belongs to from Sony's Marvel Universe.

Variety went on to clarify on Twitter that Slate's scientist character may be working for a company that is owned by the film's yet unnamed main villain-likely someone who is observing, or even has a hand in creating, the venom symbiote. She's also voiced vice-mayor Bellwether in Zootopia as well as Harley Quinn in the LEGO Batman Movie.

Her next projects include "Hotel Artemis" and "The Secret Life of Pets 2".
