As with the London run, and with the NY version scheduled to open in April 2018, the Australian production will be directed by Mr. Tiffany, with a score by the English singer/songwriter Imogen Heap.

The play features a new story by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and director John Tiffany.

It will open at Melbourne's Princess Theatre in early 2019, produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Colin Callender and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions. We've read the books, seen the films, listened to the audiobooks, some of us have been able to travel to the theme parks or Scotland, but the hardest experience to tick off the list has been getting tickets to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

It focuses on the children of the books' main characters Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.

The show has only been staged in London and is due to open on Broadway in New York City in April 2018 before it heads down under.

In Australia, the news was significant enough for the premier of Victoria, the state of which Melbourne is the capital, to record an announcement from NY.

"It's confirmation that Melbourne and Victoria really is the cultural capital of our nation, and it's going to be a great win for tourism", he said.

Friedman and Callender said they had always planned to take the production to Australia, "as soon as logistically possible".
