'Very serious' prisoners escape from British Virgin Islands jail in Irma's wake

The businessman holed himself up in a wine cellar with his family and members of his team as Hurricane Irma hit Necker Island late last week.

"The region needs a "Disaster Recovery Marshall Plan" for the [British Virgin Islands] and other territories that will aid in recovery, sustainable reconstruction and long-term revitalization of the local economy", Branson wrote Sunday on his blog, referencing the Marshall Plan that was enacted to help European nations recover after World War II. "It's really good for our airmen to go out and do the mission they train for in a real environment and it's really rewarding for them".

"New Jersey continues to stand ready to assist the victims of both hurricanes Harvey and Irma, reciprocating with the type of aid provided to New Jersey when Superstorm Sandy devastated our state", Christie said in a statement".

Multimillion-dollar homes have been reduced to piles of twisted rubble, trees were stripped of their lush foliage and boats and cars were strewn across the island like broken toys.


There were 420,000 British citizens in Florida either as residents or visitors, where Hurricane Irma also caused devastation.

The deaths, if confirmed as storm-related, would take the death toll in Florida from the hurricane to at least 17.

Four UH-60L Blackhawk helicopters and 34 Soldiers assigned to the 1/230th Aviation Regiment, Tennessee Army National Guard, are headed to the US Virgin Islands to assist in recovery efforts following Hurricane Irma. The Dutch Red Cross said 90 percent of buildings on St. Maarten were damaged and a third destroyed by Irma's fierce winds and powerful storm surge. The storm changed the 20-square mile landscape of St. John.

"No structure, no police presence, no National Guard", he told the Washington Post. How do I get off the island? We have to bring attention to them now.


Kenneth Mapp, governor of the Virgin Islands, said it could take "months, months, months" until power is restored on St. John. Power has been restored to parts of the island, though most residents still remain in the dark and downed power lines pose a hazard.

"There are people like myself who have lost everything", Young said. "But there was no looting, no abuse of folks".

Irma also ripped through neighboring St. Thomas.

The flights have carried medical supplies, emergency shelter kits, rations and clean water to affected islands, as well as engineers and military personnel.


Nearly 1,000 troops and almost 50 cops have been deployed to the British Virgin Islands, Duncan told the House of Commons on Tuesday.
