South Korea says North Korea must stop challenging peace, end nuclear programme

The sale of natural gas will be prohibited and refined petroleum sales will be capped at 2 million barrels annually.

Frustrated U.S. lawmakers called on Tuesday for a "supercharged" response to North Korea's nuclear tests, saying Washington should act alone if necessary to stiffen sanctions on companies from China and any country doing business with Pyongyang.

South Korean officials predicted that such a missile test was nearly certain to happen soon, particularly given the tougher sanctions being considered by the U.N. Security Council.

North Korea has warned the United States will pay a "due price" if it succeeds in pushing harsher sanctions through the UN.

"The DPRK shall make absolutely sure that the USA pays a due price", the Korean Central News Agency said, citing a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and using initials for North Korea's formal name.

Foreign Minister Gerry Brownlee has welcomed the prompt and unanimous United Nations Security Council Resolution imposing additional sanctions on North Korea.

Earlier this month, North Korea conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test, which it claimed was a hydrogen bomb.

The military has already been retooling helicopters and transport planes to infiltrate North Korea so ground forces - known as the Spartan 3000 - can carry out raids.

The resolution bans all textile exports and prohibits all countries from authorising new work permits for North Korean workers - two key sources of hard currency.

"We now will implement new United Nations sanctions as we have always done before", Mogherini said. China, though, has been reluctant to shut off its oil pipeline to North Korea or undertake any measures which could lead to a failed state on its border. There could also be a total asset freeze on the country's leader Kim Jong Un.

Most notably, the USA dropped its demand for a full oil embargo and a proposal to freeze the assets of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, members of his family, and other senior regime officials.

So ahead of this important holiday Japan, the United States and South Korea are all keeping a close eye on the North, watching to see what the country might have planned next.

"My delegation condemns in the strongest terms and categorically rejects the latest illegal and unlawful U.N. Security Council resolution", North Korean Ambassador Han Tae Song told the U.N. -sponsored Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, according to Reuters.

After four days of tough negotiations with China and Russian Federation, which share a border with North Korea, the United States has had to relax the text so that the oil embargo is "gradually" linked to the development of the North Korean situation, diplomats said. Relevant countries should strengthen measures to counter North Korea's sanction-evading tactics.

"A full assessment (of the data) makes it possible to conclude that the North Korean nuclear test has not caused any environmental impact in China", the Chinese Ministry of Environment said in a brief statement on its official microblogging account.
