Emails released later by Trump Jr. show the meeting was suggested to the campaign as a way to deliver damaging information about Democrat Hillary Clinton.

The president's lawyer initially denied that Mr Trump had any input.

Sen. Lindsey Graham said Tuesday that the Washington Post's report that President Donald Trump himself dictated a misleading statement to the New York Times on his son's and other campaign officials' meeting with a Russian lawyer bothered him, and that it further damaged the administration's credibility.

Mueller and his team of Democrat lawyers are examining Paul Manafort's financial and real estate activities in NY, almost a decade before his time as Trump campaign chairman.

However, even as Sanders argued Trump was not being serious, the remarks from Trump prompted a furor of criticism from current and former law enforcement officers, police departments and civil rights groups, who claimed such words are unsafe in light of the current climate of distrust between police officers and the public.

But Trump took matters into his own hands during the flight home on Air Force One. In a forward cabin, Trump was busy working on his son's statement, according to people with knowledge of events.

President Donald Trump has told members of his New Jersey golf club that he spends so much time away from Washington because the White House is a "real dump". I asked Jared and Paul to stop by.

A British middleman pitched the meeting as an opportunity for the Trump campaign to obtain "very high level and sensitive information" as "part of Russian Federation and its government's support" for the now president.

As it turned out, the Defense Department and key lawmakers who consider military issues were unaware of the policy shift and details of its implementation remain uncertain.

That explanation would be contradicted and expanded multiple times (eventually it was reported that eight people were in the meeting).

One of Trump's lawyers, Jay Sekulow gave a one sentence reply to the Post's requests for comments on the story.

He said on Meet the Press, "I do want to be clear - that the president was not involved in the drafting of the statement and did not issue the statement".

"This is all discussion, frankly, of no outcome", Sanders told reporters Tuesday. Last week Mueller sent a notice asking the White House to preserve documents related to the June 2016 meeting, as well as "any decisions made regarding the recent disclosures about the June 2016 meeting".

As Special Counsel Robert Mueller investigates potential obstruction of justice as part of his broader probe of Russian interference in the 2016 election, these advisers worry that the president's direct involvement leaves him needlessly vulnerable to allegations of a coverup.
