J&K: One Indian Army Major and jawan martyred in ongoing Shopian encounter

Two armymen, including a major, were martyred while one jawan reportedly injured after terrorists open-fired on a patrol party of security forces at Imam Sahab area of South Kashmir's Shopian district on Thursday morning.

Army Major Kamlesh Pandey of 62 Rashtriya Rifles, along with two soldiers Sepoy Tanjin Chhutin and Kripal Singh sustained bullet injuries in the ginfight.

They said the entire Zaripora and adjoining areas have been sealed and a massive search operation has been launched against the militants reportedly holed up there. "The condition of third injured is stated to be critical", said the police official. The three Army men injured during the attack were airlifted to a military base hospital in Srinagar.

This is security forces' another big achievement after gunning down of Hizbul-Mujahideen chief Burhan Wani past year.

Also, on Tuesday, Abu Dujana, a top level commander of one of the terrorist factions functioning in the Valley was shot dead by security forces.

He said a brief gunfight erupted after forces challenged the militants.

Police say a pair of ambushes by Indian government forces and Kashmiri rebels have killed two soldiers and two militants in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir. Two weapons were recovered from the slain militants, a police officer said.
