"We fixed the bug swiftly and are running a thorough investigation", it said.

Instagram sent an email to verified account users Wednesday alerting them that their information may have been accessed.

As entertainment industry bible Variety has reported, someone recently hijacked actor Selena Gomez's account to post Justin Beiber nudes.

Instagram is blaming a bug in its API for the partial breach of verified users' accounts. "No account passwords were exposed". The number of the affected users hasn't been revealed.

However, it has assured that no passwords were accessed during this exploit and added that the targets were believed to be high-profile users.

It said it believed "one or more" attackers had targeted high-profile stars to get their contact information. They warned the latter to be extra vigilant and to be wary of suspicious activities "such as unrecognized incoming calls, texts and emails". "Our main concern is for the safety of our community and, out of an abundance of caution, we are reaching out to all verified accounts". While Gomez is the network's most high-profile user, there has been no direct evidence linking the incidents. Hence why it was surprising that vindictive hackers would choose to taint her Instagram with the 2015 penis photo of Bieber, which was first leaked by the media in 2015, during his Bora Bora vacation.

Instagram has more than 500 million users worldwide, some 300 million of which use it once a day.
