Professor Broom has traditionally been a bookish, lean man who has been the brainy counterpart to the more brash Hellboy and the soldiers who often accompany him on missions.

Ian McShane can now be seen playing Mr.Wednesday in the television adaptation of American Gods, but it looks like he will be moving back to the big screen for his next role.

Ian McShane, the English actor now starring as Mr. Wednesday on American Gods, has been cast in Lionsgate and Millennium's Hellboy reboot, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.

McShane will play Hellboy's adoptive father, Professor Trevor Broom, reported Variety. The first film was released back in 2004 with Guillermo del Toro directing Ron Perlman in the title role.

Though McShane is hugely in demand for genre TV and movies - for good reason, the man can make a phone book sound like Shakespeare - this is an unusual piece of casting. Additionally, it should be interesting to see if they bring in other major Hellboy characters Liz Sherman, Abe Sapien, Lobster Johnson, and others. The refresh is directed by Neil Marshall, a horror director who burst into the mainstream with The Descent and made waves for his work on HBO's acclaimed fantasy drama series Game of Thrones. It was also announced that the new story will see Hellboy square off against a medieval sorceress who is looking to destroy all of mankind.

The production aims to start shooting in September, at locations in the United Kingdom and Bulgaria. When more news develops about Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen, we'll let you know.
