"I am writing to let you know that after almost 30 years with the firm, Washington, D.C. partner Ty Cobb is leaving Hogan Lovells on 30 July to become Special Counsel to the United States", Immelt wrote in the email, which was obtained by BuzzFeed News.

The White House confirmed in a statement on Saturday that veteran Washington attorney Ty Cobb will serve as special counsel, and sources familiar with the hiring said Cobb would handle the White House's response to the Russia-related investigations.

It also came to light last weekend that Kushner was present at a June 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer who promised damaging information on then-Democratic nominee Hillary ClintonHillary Rodham ClintonFormer Trump adviser Caputo: Trump Jr.

Gorelick said the action was fueled by the fact that Muller was a partner at Wilmer Hale one of her law firms, and brought him another three partners to conduct the Russian probe.

Only 26% said holding the meeting appropriate, while 63% said it was inappropriate, according to the new poll.

"Honestly, in a world of politics, most people are going to take that meeting", Trump said. On Thursday, he apologized for sending masked and threatening emails to a foreigner who asked him to leave Trump.

President Trump has repeatedly defended his eldest son over the controversial 2016 meeting, dismissing it as "opposition research".

Tiefer questions whether Cobb will be paid by the taxpayers, as a regular White House counsel is paid.

President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner has updated his security clearance form multiple times to disclose foreign contacts, several news outlets reported Friday, prompting speculation on why his form had been submitted before it was fully completed.

Trump Jr., now executive director of the Trump Organization, had no formal role in his father's presidential campaign.

Nevertheless, Gorelick said that after advising Kushner to look into whether to stick with her, he has opted to put criminal defense attorney Abbe Lowell at the helm for all things Russian Federation.

Cobb is a partner in the investigations practice of the law firm Hogan Lovells in Washington, D.C., and a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.

The National Law Journal previously reported Gorelick's move. "As [a] result of this process, Abbe Lowell is now responsible for the Russia-related inquiries".

Kushner faces controversy over alleged ties between the Trump 2016 presidential campaign and Russian Federation, with many calling for his security clearance to be revoked.
