Venkaiah vs Gandhi for Vice President

Addressing mediapersons here on Monday night, Mr. Chandrababu Naidu said the veteran BJP leader was a "special character" who had been relentlessly striving for the development not only of Andhra Pradesh but also the entire nation. There are even talks that the tag of Union minister ruled him out from the President's role recently. As a senior member of the party and a union minister, one would assume that Naidu's wish carried weight but clearly the party had other plans as he was declared the National Democratic Alliance's vice presidential candidate on Monday evening. The electoral college for the election consists of 790 MPs of the two chambers of Parliament.

He is a member of BJP's Parliamentary Board and Central Election Committee since January 2006.

The likely victor, Ram Nath Kovind, 71, is the former governor of the eastern state of Bihar and a longtime associate of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, or National Volunteer Corps, a Hindu group that has always been accused of stoking religious hatred against Muslims. "I have no intention to become the rashtrapati or uprashtrapati".

"There is a feeling that if Mr. Venkaiah Naidu becomes the Vice-President, he will not be in a position to take care of A.P. like he has been doing for a long time, especially since bifurcation". However what are the top reasons Naidu has been named the BJP nominee to fight the vice-presidential polls? The BJP lost the election, and Naidu was removed from the post of party president with Advani succeeding him.

Venkaiah Naidu as the BJP leader had supported the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014. "If they had waited, there could have been a possibility of achieving a consensus", he stated.

Instead in Naidu they have gone for someone who is a political heavyweight, against who chances of cross voting are a minimum, and gives them the best chance of winning an election in which they already have the numbers on their side. During the last Budget session, the Rajya Sabha saw much uproar in the wake of Finance Bill 2017, which the Upper House panned and made several revisions to, all of course rejected. He has also represented Karnataka in the Rajya Sabha. Venkiaji has a lot of experience. In Andhra Pradesh, its vote share went up from 2.8 per cent to 8.5 per cent.

His political career started during "Jai Andhra Movement" in 1972.

Naidu is also a two-time BJP national party president, the first time between July-December in 2002 and the second time between January-December in 2004. Before giving his vote, the Prime Minister addressed the media outside the Parliament and said the upcoming Monsoon session brings "hope".
