Spidey Slinging High At The Box Office!

But Sony has kept Spider-Man airborne.

To sell "Homecoming" to audiences, Sony's advertisements emphasized the new Spider-Man's youth and playful attitude, in comparison to the more serious tone of the "Amazing Spider-Man" films, as well as his partnership with Iron Man. (Pascal has since turned to producing, including this and future "Spider-Man" installments.) Box-office disappointments like the Dan Brown adaptation "Inferno", Ang Lee's high-frame-rate gambit "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk" and the cultural flashpoint "Ghostbusters" have dotted its lineup.

Its success will benefit two Hollywood competitors, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Walt Disney Co.'s Marvel Studios, that joined together to make "Homecoming" in an unusual partnership.

Tom Holland's first swing as Spider-Man will end Sunday as Sony's second-highest opening of all time.

"Despite the strength of "Spider-Man: Homecoming, ' yet another "down" weekend puts us dead even with last year's box office pace as we remain down 8% for the summer", said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore". The movie is helmed by Jon Watts and was released in India on July 7, 2017. Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark/Iron Man appears as Spider-Man's mentor, and Michael Keaton plays the villain Vulture.

The Philippine entourage was able to meet Spider-Man cast members Laura Harrier who plays Spider-Man's love interest Liz, as well as Filipino-American actor Jacob Batalon in a breakthrough role as Spider-Man's best friend Ned. No way was Sony ever going to give up on Spider-Man.

Elsewhere, Universal/Illumination's "Despicable Me 3", buoyed by overseas receipts - including big openings in China, France and Germany - has grossed $447.6 million worldwide on an $80 million production budget.

"Baby Driver" was third with $12.7 million in its second weekend of release. "Homecoming" surpassed 2002's "Spider-Man" opening of $114 million to claim second place all-time. "The silver lining is the expected continued strength of Spidey, plus 'War For The Planet of The Apes, ' 'Dunkirk, ' and 'Atomic Blonde" all in rapid succession that could fuel a much-needed late summer renaissance at the multiplex".
