No other details about "The Captain" were revealed when the character was announced during a cast panel at San Diego Comic Con on Sunday (23.07.17).

The show's writer will take on his fourth role in the BBC sci-fi series when he appears on screen in Peter Capaldi's final episode, which will be called "Twice Upon a Time", in December.

Pearl Mackie shared her emotion with the crowd about being apart of the series. Missy tried to double-cross the previous incarnation of herself, The Master (John Simm), who in turn killed her. Nardole was stuck on a ship trying to save a bunch of kids from an inevitable Cyberman takeover, and the Doctor was so injured that he started to regenerate. As revealed earlier, the episode also features Mark Gatiss.

With all of the excitement following BBC America's confirmation of Jodie Whittaker as the next Doctor, and the eventual heartbreak involved in knowing that we will have to say goodbye to Peter Capaldi, the special Christmas Episode hasn't been getting enough attention.

The minute-long teaser also makes clear that this Christmas story won't just be accessible to long term fans.

Pearl's appearance in the Christmas Special was uncertain until now as her companion, Bill, had left the Doctor for dead in the season finale. "I think Jodie is going to be incredible", added Capaldi, "she's a great choice".

As we bid a fond farewell to Series 10, the Twelfth Doctor, our spectacular Tardis team, and showrunner, they ask what Moffat would miss about being on Doctor Who.

He then added: "I wish every journalist who was writing the alternative would shut the hell up".

Capaldi isn't the only one who's leaving. "I don't mean that we've done terribly - our guest cast are among the most diverse on television but I feel as though I could have done better overall".
