This is not the first time Guardiola has spoken in glowing terms about the 11 time Premier League title victor.

In an interview with Catalan newspaper L'Esportiu, Guardiola - who also failed to pick up any silverware for the first season ever as a head coach last term - remarked that it could be a decade before City could consider themselves on a par with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich despite their obvious wealth.

"This year we weren't there but you must realise that even Barcelona haven't made it to semifinals each year".

In turn, with Man City being an interested party, several sides have been linked with swooping for the 28-year-old but things could be about to get very complicated for City which has forced them to speed up their plans to sign the talismanic forward. Pep Guardiola addressed the pressing needs already with signings of Bernardo Silva and Ederson.

"Now with Txiki, we are trying to make the changes that are necessary to reinforce the squad".

However, they are set to invest heavily this summer to close the gap at the top, which the manager reckons isn't as big when compared to the other Premier League clubs.

It has been claimed that both Newcastle United and West Ham United hold an interest in the 30-year-old, who is looking for first-team football in order to boost his chances of remaining first choice for the Three Lions ahead of next year's World Cup.

According to The Sun, Guardiola could see the club banned from signing players for the next two transfer windows after this summer, after a row over youngster Benjamin Garre.

"I played with eight or nine of Pellegrini's players - they are good, but we had to rejuvenate the team".
