Wonder Woman Is a Thrilling Start, Now Bring on the Sequels

The wonderful folk of Lismore will be raising funds for women's services in the northern rivers tomorrow at a special screening of the new Wonder Woman film, followed by a karaoke evening at the Northern Rivers Hotel.

Frenetic editing and a bombastic score by Rupert Gregson-Williams give a false impression of dramatic momentum but Jenkins' film sags, and knowing the title character emerges unscathed from the melee leaves us plenty of time to identify supporting cast, who are destined to shift their mortal coils. It's all very simplistic, but Gadot's serious and unapologetic curiosity sells the dubious premise that a woman so versed in so many things from Socrates to the "pleasures of the flesh" could be this unaware of human flaws.

While actress Gal Gadot will wield the golden lasso on the silver screen this Friday, she's not the only one to slip into the tiara of Princess Diana of Themyscira. It's a responsibility Gadot doesn't take lightly, and it's clear from many of her quotes that she understands the timeliness and weight of such a character. These arguably take away from the pacing of some of the action, but when they're used more sparingly, it does make for some pretty spectacular moments.

"I think the main reason was that [director] Justin Lin really liked that I was in the military, and he wanted to use my knowledge of weapons", she told Forward in 2011. Chris Pine co-stars as Steve Trevor. She's buff, and even with sometimes really awful computer effects you believe this lady can lick her weight in bad guys. Following the underwhelming trio of Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and especially Man of Steel, it's the first movie in the DC Expanded Universe worthy of its guaranteed box office riches. A superhero character has never been so charismatic while simultaneously being unrealistic.

It's also the first female-directed live-action movie with a $100-million budget, according to CinemaBlend.

Maybe I'm spoiled or maybe DC just didn't care, but I was little disappointed that there was not an additional scene after the credits rolled. "You're either a spy or a fighter pilot", says Pine.

We'll have to wait and see, I guess. I pinch myself every time I get to do it.

I think that in superhero movies, they fight other people, they fight villains. Hopefully, DC continues with this formula and even improves on it. His longtime assistant, publicist - Marston was a consummate self-promoter - and the mother of two of his four children was Olive Byrne, niece of Margaret Sanger, a promoter of birth control as a means of women's liberation, and a founder of what would become Planned Parenthood.

What are your thoughts on Wonder Woman's legacy after more than 75 years?
