Meanwhile, a statement released by MedStar Washington Hospital Center states: "Scalise sustained a single rifle shot to the left hip". Scalise was wounded in a shooting at a Republican baseball practice.

As for rehabilitation, Sava said he believed Scalise will be "able to walk and hopefully run" in the future.

"When tragedy strikes we are family", said Representative Nanette Barragan, who plays on the Democratic baseball team and invited all to attend the congressional charity baseball game at Nationals Park on Thursday night.

The gunman was shot by Capitol Police officers who were in Scalise's security detail and later died of his injuries.

"On behalf of Steve and our children, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received since Wednesday's events", Scalise's wife, Jennifer, said in a statement Friday. Scalise remains in critical condition but his vital signs have stabilized and doctors have lifted sedation enough for him to respond to family members.

It added: 'His condition is critical and he will require additional operations'.

Earlier Thursday, President Donald Trump commented on the congressman's condition, saying Scalise was "in some trouble" but that he hoped the congressman would be OK.

The round fragmented into hundreds of pieces and did "substantial damage" to bones, internal organs and blood vessels, Sava said.

The alleged shooter, 66-year-old James Hodgkinson, was shot and killed by Capital Police.

Williams, a Republican coach who injured his leg and ankle while diving for cover during the shooting, also said it was important to play ball as planned.

The House majority whip was critically wounded Wednesday morning after a man with a rifle opened fire on Republican politicians as they practised for a charity baseball game in Alexandria, Va.

"In Washington we have our disagreements, but we all agree that we are here to serve this nation we love and the people who call it home", Mr Trump said.

A congressional aide and a lobbyist were also injured in the shooting. House Speaker Paul Ryan was met with a bipartisan standing ovation when he announced that the game was still on during a meeting on Wednesday.
