Mr Sekulow said Mr Trump's tweet was in reaction to a story in The Washington Post, which was the first to report Mr Mueller was examining whether Mr Trump had tried to obstruct the probe by firing Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey in May.

"With all due respect, the president said "I am being investigated" in a tweet, and people take his word on that", Tapper said. I really, truly believe that.

The White House used a memo he wrote to justify Trump's decision to fire FBI Director James Comey, but Trump's firing of Comey may now be part of the probe.

Sekulow later appeared on Fox News Sunday and was challenged by host Chris Wallace over twice seeming to confirm the investigation he had previously denied. "Lemme be clear: The president is not under investigation", he said. "I'm just curious, why doesn't the president embrace this investigation if he's innocent?" "Ultimately, whether he believes it or not, the work's going to move forward", he added.

He sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is conducting its own probe into Russian election meddling.

Sekulow added that he thinks Mr. Trump will address the issue of any alleged tape recordings of Mr. Trump's conversation with Comey "in the week ahead", saying the tapes were not "priority number one" amid Mr. Trump's announcement to roll back President Obama's Cuba policies and Wednesday's shooting in Alexandria, Virginia.

If the question is, did President Trump act to impede or end a legitimate investigation for the purposes of protecting himself or his friends I think his goose is probably close to cooked.

Sekulow suggested that Trump had taken to Twitter because the president wanted to fight back against news organizations that Trump and his supporters have repeatedly accused of using leaks and anonymous sources to undermine the president.

Sekulow, the chief counsel for the conservative American Center for Law & Justice (ACLJ), argued in a Fox News op-ed last Friday that the case against Trump had disintegrated with Comey's testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee this month. "But let me be very clear here, as it has been since the beginning, the president is not and has not been under investigation for obstruction". Schiff spoke on ABC's This Week and King spoke on NBC. Those officials also claim that investigators are looking for evidence of any financial crimes among Trump's associates.

But Sekulow says the legal team has "received no notice of investigation". Angus King of ME, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats.

Sekulow on Sunday also acknowledged that the president was "fully aware that if in fact he took this action, he would see a lengthening" of the amount of time it would take to get through the Russian Federation investigation if James Comey was removed as FBI director, but still made a decision to move forward with firing Comey because he "thought it was in the best interest of the American people".
