But former FBI Director James Comey's remarks to a packed hearing of the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday have left the Republican president far from unscathed.

Comey was leading the probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election before he was sacked by President Trump in May.

The president, who booted Mr. Flynn on February 13 and his Federal Bureau of Investigation director on May 9, says he never came close to even suggesting a pass for the national security adviser whom he sacked for having lied about his relations with certain individuals of Russian persuasion.

"I think Jim Comey's credibility is at about zero right now", he said.

The FBI is investigating links between associates of Trump during last year's campaign and Russians who sought to influence the election by hacking Democrats.

Former FBI Director James Comey testifies before a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., June 8, 2017.

According to Comey's testimony, Trump tried to derail the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn. "I was a bit stunned, and didn't have the presence of mind", he said.

Two days after Comey was sacked, The New York Times reported on a January conversation - allegedly sourced from those Comey told about the encounter - in which Comey claimed Trump asked him for his loyalty.

Comey delivered scathing remarks about the president on Thursday at a congressional hearing and testified that Trump had asked him to drop a Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into former aide Michael Flynn and his alleged ties to Russian Federation.

Ultimately, Comey told the committee, he wanted what was in the unclassified memo made public because, "I thought it might prompt the appointment of a special counsel" in the Russian Federation inquiry.

It's a discrepancy that a recording could resolve, if one exists. "I took it as a very disturbing thing, very concerning", Comey said. Trump didn't specify why he thought Comey lied and how he was vindicated.

Meanwhile, President Trump's attorney Marc Kasowitz and members of the GOP focused on Comey's confirmation that the president was not under FBI investigation. A president can be charged after leaving office.

With a single tweet, Trump also castigated Comey as "a leaker" for giving an account of his conversation with the president to a law professor who shared it with a news outlet.

"Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication.and WOW, Comey is a leaker!"

Comey, who was sacked by Trump on May 9, revealed during his testimony that he had a friend, later identified as Columbia University Law Professor Dan Richman, leak contents of his private memos to the media in hopes of prompting the "appointment of a special counsel".
