The Metropolitan Police have also confirmed they're responding with armed officers to an incident at London's Borough Market, although whether these incidents are in any way connected is yet unclear.

The BBC and CNN said witnesses saw the van directly hitting people Saturday on the London Bridge.

"A white van driver came speeding - probably about 50mph - veered of the road into the crowds of people who were walking along the pavement", she told BBC News.

Initial reporting [02:58 AM, Pakistan time]: LONDON: At the request of British police, the London Bridge rail station has been closed on late Saturday night after they reported an incident, local transport authorities said. That witness said the van hit five to six people.

On March 22, the British Parliament building was attacked by a man who ran over pedestrians with a auto and then stabbed several people.

A spokesman for Prime Minister Theresa May says she is being briefed on the incident at London Bridge.

Roberts said he heard what sounded like gunshots about 10 minutes later.

Soon after, there were reported stabbings at nearby Borough Market, an area full of bars and restaurants.

"It's too early to say whether this is a terrorist incident or what is occurring, although I have to say we have seen this pattern before, including the Westminster Bridge attack earlier this year", she said. People were coming inside and saying they had witnessed people being stabbed.

The other was a multiple stabbing at nearby Borough Market, a gourmet food market with several restaurants that would have been busy with diners and drinkers on a Saturday night.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn tweeted: "Brutal and shocking incidents reported in London".

I'd say there are about four severely injured people.

London's Metropolitan Police confirmed that an incident was underway.

Witnesses reported that a white van was travelling fast - about 80km/h - when it mounted the sidewalk and ploughed into a group of people crossing the Thames River on foot. BBC showed dozens of people, evidently caught up in the attack, being escorted through a police cordon with their hands on their heads.

Police have rushed to three different incidents in London after reports of a van hitting pedestrians, stabbings and gunfire have circulated.

Police have also responded to an incident at Borough Market, which is within half a mile of the London Bridge, and Vauxhall, which is three miles away.

Another witness told Reuters she saw three people who appeared to have their throats cut.

"The police were absolutely brilliant, they came in and explained the situation", he said".

London Bridge and the area around it has been closed due to a "major police incident", TFL said. "Armed officers responded and shots have been fired", the Met said on Twitter.

The attacks come days ahead of a June 8 election and less than two weeks after a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a pop concert by United States singer Ariana Grande in Manchester in northern England.

She said it was a fast-moving investigation and her thoughts were with "those who are caught up in these terrible events".

According to the Sun up to 20 people could have been injured.
