Obama: We never stopped trying to get Otto Warmbier home

US t before Trump's tweet, Chinese state media put out an editorial saying Beijing has done all it can to break the stalemate with North korea and that even after Warmbier's death, China will by no means act as a USA ally when it comes to pressuring Pyongyang. "At least I know China tried!"

The family of Otto Warmbier, the University of Virginia student who was held captive in North Korea for more than a year and died on Monday shortly after his return to the United States, has declined an autopsy, CNN reported on Wednesday.

The U.S. pushed China Wednesday to rein in companies that deal with North Korea after President Donald Trump tweeted ahead of the high-level talks that Beijing's efforts to sway its wayward ally weren't working.

Sentenced to hard labour for stealing a political poster from a North Korean hotel, the 22-year-old Warmbier was medically evacuated in a coma last week after almost 18 months in captivity.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer did not have a specific answer when asked at Tuesday's press briefing how the administration would respond to Warmbier's death.

President Donald Trump has been counting on China to use its economic leverage with the government of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as American concern grows over the North's acceleration toward having a nuclear missile that can strike the US mainland.

But it looks like there may be strain on both sides.

The tour group that arranged Warmbier's trip is based in China.

"As an American, I feel extremely fortunate that we are able to travel around the world".

"Unfortunately, the very bad torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today", the statement said. "But I don't think it's the government's role to tell us where we can and cannot go", Wheatley said.

The U.S. and North Korea have no diplomatic relations.

Uri Tours, which has arranged trips for more than 2,000 USA citizens, told "CBS This Morning": "We're reviewing our policies on Americans traveling to [North Korea]". "And he most certainly should not have been murdered for it", Senator Rubio said. In the House, lawmakers lined up behind legislation from Rep. Adam Schiff, a Democrat, and Rep. Joe Wilson, a Republican. While there, he was arrested by North Korean officials for allegedly stealing a propaganda poster from a hotel, and sentenced to 15 years hard labor.

A ban on Americans visiting North Korea would only slightly add to the North's isolation and loss of revenue. In the wake of Warmbier's death, Chan said the company will continue that suspension.

President Moon Jae-in may share the common goal of North Korea's denuclearization with President Donald Trump, but the two leaders appear to be drifting apart on their action plans to achieve that end, with Washington hardening its line in the wake of Otto Warmbier's death.

In an interview with a foreign media outlet, Moon said, "it is deplorable that North Korea does not respect human rights, which are the universal norms and values of humankind".
