Last year's runner-up Murray entered the third round with a hard-fought 6-7 (3/7), 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7/3) win over Martin Klizan of Slovakia.

Andy Murray snuffed out the challenge of hard-hitting Martin Klizan to book a blockbuster third-round date with Juan Martin del Potro at the French Open.

When Spanish tennis player Nicolás Almagro broke down after a recurring knee injury again forced him to quit a major tournament mid-match, his opponent stepped up.

Ninth seed Agnieszka Radwanska also dropped the first set but recovered to win 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 6-3 against Alison Van Uytvanck.

"It will be very tough", Murray said.

"I'm playing way better than I was two weeks ago, and today's match will have done me a lot of good, because physically I pulled up well and felt good, so I will gain a lot of confidence from that".

Having lost virtually three years of his career to wrist problems, Del Potro took little pleasure in advancing to a clash with world number one Andy Murray. "And sometimes the heart is first than the tennis match or the tennis life".

"And of course it's not easy for me when you have a friend on the other side of the court showing an injury or crying".

Third seed Stan Wawrinka, the 2015 champion, reached the last 32 for the 10th time with a 6-4, 7-6 (7/5), 7-5 win over Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine. Wawrinka will face Italy's Fabio Fognini for a place in the fourth round.

Nishikori beat France's Jeremy Chardy 6-3 6-0 7-6 (7-5).

But 13th seed Tomas Berdych has been knocked out, losing 7-5 6-4 6-4 to world number 53 Karen Khachanov.

The world No 1 came through an absorbing contest on a sweltering Court Suzanne Lenglen 6-7 (3-7 ) 6-2 6-2 7-6 (7-3).

Matches to look for Friday on the grounds of Roland Garros include (4) Rafael Nadal vs. Nikoloz Basilashvili, (2) Novak Djokovic vs. Diego Schwartzman, (11) Grigor Dimitrov vs. (20) Pablo Carreno Busta, (6) Dominic Thiem vs. (25) Steve Johnson, and (5) Milos Raonic vs. Guillermo "G-Lo" Garcia-Lopez.

There are few things Murray enjoys more than proving people wrong, and every set he gets under his belt here at the French Open will increase his belief that he is beginning to find his form at the right time.

Isner and Lorenzi were two of the 30 men in the second round aged over 30 - an Open era record at any Slam.

Pliskova has never got beyond the second round in six previous attempts.

In the women's competition, Latvian 17th seed Anastasija Sevastova defeated Eugenie Bouchard of Canada 6-3, 6-0 to enter the third round.
