"There must have been 50 to 100 shots fired", he told CNN. "This has got to stop". "We lose [93] Americans to gun violence every day", he said. The Vermont independent senator says he's "sickened by this despicable act".

Authorities say it is too early to ascertain the gunman's motive, but the Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into Hodgkinson's anti-Trump social media rants.

March 22: Trump is a Traitor.

"It's Time to Destroy Trump & Co.", the post said.

Hodgkinson attended Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, and through the end of previous year worked for JTH Inspections, his Facebook page indicates. "When he did home inspections for me, he didn't rile up the buyers or make ridiculous statements".

Top Republican politician Steve Scalise was shot and injured when the gunman targeted the group at a baseball field in Virginia.

Sanders said he had been informed that Hodgkinson had volunteered on his presidential campaign.

Former classmate Tom Calhoun said Hodgkinson liked sports and was on the wrestling team but other than that he can't really pinpoint anything he was passionate about.

Officials told CBS News that Hodgkinson was carrying an M-4 assault rifle and a handgun.

Hodgkinson also had a history of violence. Charges in that case were dismissed.

Fox News anchor Bret Baier tweeted that Scalise was shot in the hip and is expected to survive.

Scalise, a Republican from Louisiana, had surgery and is in stable condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, his office said. Among those wounded were House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, an aide to U.S. Rep. Roger Williams, a lobbyist and two Capitol Police officers. He said Hodgkinson's wife left for work Wednesday morning as she always does.

In a message directed to Rep. Steve Scalise, the Louisiana Republican wounded in the attack, Trump said: "America is praying for you, and America is praying for all of the victims of this awful shooting". The gunman later died of his injuries.

"You know when someone gives you that feeling that you don't want to be around him? I thought it was some exercise".

President Donald Trump confirmed Wednesday that Hodgkinson had died from his injuries after the shooting.

"America is praying for you and America is praying for the victims", he said. Republicans also control both chambers of Congress. But Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., raised the ominous prospect that the incident may have been politically motivated, saying that a man who appeared to match Hodgkinson's description approached him and others in the parking lot of the Alexandria, Va., baseball field to ask whether the practice involved Republicans or Democrats.
