U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise's condition has been upgraded to "serious" after he underwent surgery Saturday for injuries sustained in a shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice earlier this week, the hospital treating him said in a release.

Scalise remained listed in critical condition Thursday night after multiple surgeries, though word came from the hospital during the game that he had improved.

The congressman's chief of staff, Brett Horton, read a statement from Jennifer Scalise, the congressman's wife.

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body. Bernie Sanders campaign volunteer, fought a running gun battle with police before he, too, was shot and later died.

The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP.

House Speaker Paul Ryan visited Scalise at the hospital Friday, an aide said.

Doctors say the Louisiana congressman wounded during Wednesday's attack by a gunman on a baseball practice session remains in critical condition but has shown improvement.

The alleged shooter, identified by police as James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois, was killed in a shootout with police Wednesday morning after shooting Scalise, Griner and two others. Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful".

The FBI recovered a cellphone, computer and camera from Hodgkinson's van and was examining them for evidence, the statement said.

The shooting occurred at a popular park where Republican lawmakers and others were gathered for a 7 a.m. practice for the annual Congressional Baseball Game that pits Republicans against Democrats to raise money for charity. The Congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time. The President also credited Scalise for bringing unity to the country.

Scalise was among five people wounded when a shooter sprayed rifle fire at congressional Republicans practicing on a diamond in Alexandria.

"By playing tonight, you are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence, or assaults on our democracy", Trump said.

Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited the hospital Wednesday evening.

Numerous players in the congressional game Thursday night are wearing Louisiana State University hats in honor of Scalise, a graduate of the school, as they assemble at Nationals Park in Washington.

U.S. Rep. Jeff Duncan of SC said he had just left the practice and encountered the gunman in the parking lot before the shooting.

Scalise had been fielding balls at second base when he was shot and then dragged himself away from the infield in a trail of blood.
