Ups & 3 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (May 9)

Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Dolph Ziggler was added last night, and with five matches already booked and Sami Zayn vs. Baron Corbin seemingly in the pipeline, there's not much room left.

Orton was out first, and he was met with a challenger as Mahal predictably came out to talk and stare him down.

Kevin Owens entered and told the two to stop bickering as no one cared about India, the House of Horrors match or England.

Suddenly, the lack of credibility that had plagued Mahal earlier was diminished, his legitimacy increased ahead of his championship showdown with The Viper on May 21. The show closed with a victorious Jinder Mahal standing tall over WWE Champion Randy Orton, and featured significant developments in the tag team and women's divisions, along with a Ziggler/Nakamura confrontation that fortunately avoided the previous week's failings.

Jinder Mahal's push has a lot of people out there scratching their heads, as he went from a jobber to #1 contender basically overnight.

If you don't want WWE SmackDown Live to be spoiled, stop right here as full results from the tape-delayed show are below.

Dolph Ziggler confronted Shinsuke Nakamura inside the ring. Ziggler said he would fight when he was ready and claimed he would expose Nakamura as a fraud at Backlash. It ended with Sami Zayn running out to attack Corbin.

After the match, The Usos interrupt the celebration to cut an intense and odd promo about how they are going to retain the SmackDown Tag Team Championships at Backlash. However, WWE SmackDown Live has been smart with these things to this point.

The Universal Title and the WWE Championship have become hot topics on WWE programming as of late, and WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross noted in his latest blog that he likes the trend of stars being vocal about title shots, and he hopes it continues. However, Jinder Mahal is the legal man. Mahal takes advantage of Orton's unawareness to pin the WWE Champion after a Cobra Clutch slam.
