Cohn spoke to reporters from the sidelines of the G7 summit in Sicily, Trump's final stop on his nine-day, five-stop overseas trip.

"Since our last G7 summit in Japan, we haven't seen anything that would justify a change in our sanctions policy towards Russia", Tusk, who coordinates policy for the EU's 28 leaders, told reporters.

"I think the president's made it clear how the Russians could have the sanctions lifted and how they could have the sanctions taken away", Cohn added.

"Natural gas, which we have become an abundant producer, which we're going to became a major exporter of, is such a cleaner fuel", Cohn said.

National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn told reporters that he hadn't been clear enough when discussing Russian Federation sanctions on Thursday, seeking a day later to make it clear that the Trump administration would take a harder line on Russian Federation.

Tusk spoke a day after a USA official, asked whether Trump plans to extend the US sanctions, indicated that he had not decided.

Those comments are a clarification of remarks Cohn, a former Goldman Sachs executive, made on Thursday in which he suggested that Trump was "looking" at lifting sanctions against Russian Federation.

Tusk already met with Trump yesterday in Brussels, and said that while both sides did not have a "common position about Russia", they appeared to be on the same line where the Ukrainian conflict is concerned. Of course. I am maybe less optimistic when it comes to President (Vladimir) Putin's plans and intentions.

About 10,000 people have been killed in the three-year conflict and concerns are growing that the situation could once again rapidly deteriorate.
