Last month (Apr17), director James Gunn announced plans to close the highly successful franchise with a third film, which he will write and helm. Besides Saldana as Gamora, the rest of the "Guardians" crew has Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon and Vin Diesel as Baby Groot.

In two weeks of worldwide release, the film has also made $269 million (£207.1 million) overseas. That makes the sequel to the 2014 hit Marvel's 15th straight No. 1 opening at the domestic box office, CNN reported.

Meanwhile, The Fate of the Furious dropped to second with $8.5 million, bringing its total to just a bit over $207 million. Combined with a $698.1 million foreign gross, the live-action remake is up to $1.18 billion worldwide. Since premiering overseas more than a week ago, the movie has pulled in about $428 million, CNN reported.

Granted, it's a little early to be dwelling on such thoughts, considering that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is still playing in theaters across the globe - and making a pretty penny for Marvel in the process. Gunn's follow-up had a $200 million dollar budget, only $30 million more than his first Marvel feature, and should easily clear $500 million within the next week. Still, the $145 million estimate, courtesy of Box Office Mojo, is a solid start to the summer movie season, with the movie earning an impressive $33,368 per-screen average from 4,347 theaters.

Shall we dance?: Disney's Beauty And The Beast, starring Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as her furry jailer, rounded out the top five with $5 million in its eighth weekend of release. The Fate of the Furious impressively held the Top Spot at the box office for three weeks a row.

The animated comedy "The Boss Baby" took third place with $6 million, giving it a six-week take of $156.5 million.

In limited launch, the Orchard's "The Dinner" made $669,000 from 509 locations.

As for next week, Charlie Hunnam with his shirt off.
