Media watchers blame hostility toward reporters on Trump

"I think he wailed on me once or twice". With about 75 per cent of the vote counted, he led Democrat Rob Quist, a banjo player and first-time candidate, by about 50 per cent to 44 per cent.

Republicans for the most part stood by Gianforte, with several telling reporters he would be welcome on Capitol Hill. With the possibility of a Democrat holding a US House seat in the state for the first time in two decades, the race drew global attention.

Greg Gianforte is a tech millionaire endorsed by Trump.

"He took me to the ground", Jacobs said of the attack.

The incident in question happened Wednesday night ahead of a campaign event for Republican candidate Greg Gianforte.

"He's on top of me".

Gianforte was in a private office preparing for an interview with Fox News when Jacobs came in without permission, campaign spokesman Shane Scanlon said.

Gianforte had been a strong favourite throughout the campaign and that continued even after authorities charged him with assault on Wednesday.

But Ryan wouldn't say if Greg Gianforte should be barred from joining the House GOP conference if he wins Thursday's election.

He says in a statement that Jacobs was asked to leave after trying to ask questions.

"It's unfortunate that this aggressive behavior from a liberal journalist created this scene at our campaign volunteer BBQ", he said.

But eye witness accounts contradicted that version of events. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California criticized Gianforte as "a wannabe Trump".

The Guardian is a British liberal newspaper that opened a US edition 10 years ago. The seat had been held by Ryan Zinke, appointed by Trump as interior secretary.

Many voters cast their ballot early, so it will be hard to know the impact of the charge on the election results.

There's been plenty of action in the Big Sky State before Wednesday's bombshell revelation that one of the candidates allegedly body slammed a reporter, but if you're wondering about the basics of the race, CNN is here for you.

But other Democrats tried to capitalize on the moment. "And as people who wrangle words on a by-the-minute basis, that doesn't happen often". "We love him", said Karen Screnar, a Republican voter who had driven all the way from Helena to support Gianforte. Gianforte's camp seemed to issue a press release that twisted the incident as later shown on an audio tape. Then loud crashing sounds can be heard. But when you're starting to talk about physical violence - and body-slamming is no joke - this is a matter for law enforcement. In the recording, Gianforte can be heard saying that he was "sick and exhausted of you guys". Get the hell out of here!

The editorial board of the Billings Gazette, a CNN affiliate, retracted its enforcement of Gianforte, stating, "We believe that you can not love America, love the Constitution, talk about the importance of a free press and then pummel a reporter".

During one of his rallies, Gianforte was accompanied by Donald Trump, Jr. and Vice President Mike Pence.
