Manchester United Midfielder Paul Pogba shared his condolences after practice.

It left United's Champions League hopes resting on this game but this win and subsequent qualification for the group stages of Europe's elite tournament means that Mourinho can regard this season as a real success.

On an emotional night following the attack which killed 22 people at Ariana Grande's concert at the Manchester Arena on Monday, United's fans were allowed a measure of celebration as Jose Mourinho's side won in comfort.

In tough circumstances, United handled the occasion better than an Ajax side featuring six players aged 21 or under and playing in the famous Dutch club's first European final in 21 years.

French worldwide star Paul Pogba, who was brought in by the club last summer for approximately $117 million, struck first in the 17 minute with a driving shot that took a deflection off one of the Ajax defenders and gave Manchester United a 1-0 lead.

"So it's a good moment for us". I try to make my players respect the opponents' strengths and also to understand their weaknesses.

"This is just football but what happened two day ago was frightful. We had to do a job".

Manchester United defender and a native of Manchester released this statement on the attacks.

He also aimed a barb at those managers he described as "poets" who do not win anything.

"We know things like this are very sad all over the world", said Pogba referring to the attack.

"We did it, so we are very proud".

"The start [of the game] was important and after the goals we controlled the game". The team was solid and showed great tactical intelligence.

Herrera insists the question about whether or not it has been a successful campaign is no longer up for debate.

United's season was always going to be defined by this game.

"It was game of the season because we couldn't talk about a good season if we hand't won it. We deserve the victory, we performed like a big team".

At the end of the day, Mourinho will be judged by how well he does in the Premier League, and to a lesser extent, the Champions League.

Mkhitaryan scored the second goal in the 48th minute, hooking the ball in from close range from a corner. Pogba controlled the midfield in the Europa League final.

"It was hard to train yesterday but the manager told us is that the only thing we could do is win this for them", he said.

Mourinho decided weeks ago to sacrifice the chance of achieving that by finishing in the Premier League's top four, and instead aim for the extra Champions League place awarded to the Europa League winners. However, after Manchester United's win on Wednesday, Mourinho looked the happiest of the lot. With strong rumours that Griezmann and James Rodriguez could both be on their way to Old Trafford, will they be lifting a different European trophy next year?

But on the night, Manchester United exploited that gulf of experience.
