Car plows through Times Square, 1 dead, 20 hurt

Helpless pedestrians had little time to react as the vehicle barreled down the sidewalk and through intersections before smashing into a row of steel security barriers installed in recent years to prevent vehicle attacks on the square where massive crowds gather every New Year's Eve.

"Based on the info we have at this moment there is no indication that this was an act of terrorism", De Blasio said at a press conference in Times Square after the crash.

"He's a United States citizen and a former member of the armed forces with the United States Navy", the mayor said.

News footage showed a red, smoking Honda Accord leaning on its side apparently after crashing into steel barriers and a post at 45th Street, and reports indicated the driver has been extricated from the vehicle.

Witnesses said the motorist had driven against traffic and onto the sidewalk, striking pedestrians. The auto leaned on a lamppost and steel barriers meant to block vehicles from getting onto the sidewalk.

News outlets said the suspect was a 26-year-old male from the city's Bronx borough.

Kelly Graves said she feared the worst, maybe a bomb, as "chaos" erupted and people began running.

"FDNY confirms 1 fatality, 12 injuries in Times Square motor vehicle accident, 45 St/Broadway", it said.

Officials said 22 people were hurt. He was combative with officers who handcuffed him, authorities said. Police pursued the driver on foot and apprehended him a few blocks from the scene of the crash. About 20 other people were injured.

Police cordoned off an area from 41st to 47th streets and from 6th to 8th avenues, effectively shutting down one of the busiest parts of one of the busiest cities in the world.

The sidewalks in many parts of Times Square and surrounding blocks are lined with metal posts created to prevent cars from getting onto the sidewalks and other public areas. He turned in time to see the auto roaring up the street.

"It is believed to be an isolated incident, it remains under investigation", NY police said on Twitter.

President Trump is said to have been "made aware" of the incident.

Thoughts and prayers to loved ones and neighbors in the theatre district in light of this morning's auto crash.

Multiple people from their social media accounts were reporting seeing injured individuals carried away on stretchers. He said he saw about five people who looked gravely injured - "people, really bad, in front of us".

Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan has offered his condolences to the people of NY.
