He said that Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed at their summit in Florida last week that Pyongyang's "provocative behavior" developing nuclear weapons was unacceptable.

President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping wrapped up their first summit by announcing a 100-day plan to improve strained trade ties, the only tangible announcement after their meetings that were overshadowed by the USA military strikes in Syria. "The relationship developed by President Xi and myself I think is outstanding". Both leaders conducted themselves with professionalism and relative ease. After all, ahead of the summit, Trump openly fretted about a "very difficult" meeting with his Chinese counterpart.

The most the USA seems willing to do now is to try to ensure no further encroachment by China in other island and reef chains by suggesting it will not follow the Obama pattern of largely ignoring such expansion of China's military reach.

However, the main bone of contention between Trump, an ardent protectionist, and Xi, a reluctant globalist, is America's ballooning trade deficit with China, amounting to $347bn.

Lardy said anti-dumping cases on steel were mostly symbolic, since United States imports of steel from China accounted for only a few percentage points of the trade deficit.

He has threatened to label China as a currency manipulator, review its non-market economy status, and impose tariffs and punitive sanctions against Beijing.

President Donald Trump informed his guest of the U.S. strike as their dinner was winding down on Thursday evening in Florida.

Mr Trump had warned of a trade war against Beijing, and a literal war against a nuclear-armed North Korea, and he aimed no substantial policy shifts from Mr Xi.

North Korea considers Syria, led by President Bashar al-Assad, a key ally.

With its strategic patience depleted, Washington is weighing pre-emptive action. Spicer said at the Friday press briefing that Trump was presented with several different options earlier this week and considered each with his national security team before deciding on the strike.

"The Chinese narrative has increasingly been that Trump is a paper tiger", Haenle explained. "This will be interpreted in China as a great success, achieved by Xi's approach of dealing with him".

"Armed with nuclear weapons, he would hardly flinch at the attack in Syria", Chang said. China may have committed to increase its pressures on North Korea. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said that the two sides agreed to a "100-day plan" aimed at reducing U.S. trade deficit with China.

Ismail said her sister had kidney problems that needed treatment overseas, but has been repeatedly rejected because apparently no one wanted to take in Syrian refugees anymore. But they did sound highly upbeat about the direction of their bilateral relationship.

The Republican president, who took office on January 20, tweeted last week that the United States could no longer tolerate massive trade deficits and job losses and that his meeting with Xi "will be a very hard one".

"We've had a long discussion already, and so far I have gotten nothing, absolutely nothing", the US President conceded playfully yesterday after initial talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

In diplomatic terms it was more sweet seduction than summit, long mapped out by the Chinese who have resisted Trump provocations during the USA election campaign and since he was sworn in.
