Seattle Mariners win fourth straight with 6-1 victory over Miami Marlins

This time around, it was Marlins starter Wei-Yin Chen in Seattle.

Wei-Yin Chen pitched seven hitless innings as the Marlins took a no-hitter into the ninth on their way to beating the Mariners 5-0 on Tuesday.

The Marlins were on the verge of the sixth no-hitter in franchise history when Mitch Haniger lined a one-out double into right-center field off Kyle Barraclough.

Chen exited the game after 100 pitches when Marlins manager Don Mattingly opted for his bullpen.

Kyle Seager also had four RBIs as the Mariners bailed out a shaky Felix Hernandez and completed a 6-3 homestand that effectively resets their season after a terrible 1-7 start.

"It's good to help a friend out, I guess", Barraclough said with a smile, almost asking as a question as much as he was making a statement. Last time out, I think he threw a lot of offspeed pitches. After Cano's grounder to second erased Haniger on a force, Chen nicked Cruz with a pitch.

Marlins: Edinson Volquez (0-1) makes his fourth start of the season still looking for his first victory. Paxton has not allowed an earned run in his first 21 innings. A Mexican delicacy consisting of toasted grasshoppers doused with key lime salt and chili powder, the treat has been selling so much that the stadium actually ran out over a three-game series last week.

Yelich drove home the game's first run on a high chopper off the plate in the first.

"He deserves everything he gets", Mattingly said.

A balanced attack produced nine runs by getting 11 hits and drawing 10 walks in a nice recovery from Tuesday's 5-0 loss, when the Mariners didn't get a hit until Haniger's one-out double in the ninth inning. Chen was pulled after seven, and Ziegler got three groundouts to complete the eighth. He managed to keep the no-no intact in the seventh and preserved his shutout despite allowing two baserunners in the frame.

Mariners reliever Tony Zych, in his second appearance since being activated from the disabled list, threw a scoreless eighth inning, striking out two.

Gallardo (0-2) gave up runs in each of the first three innings, allowing the leadoff batter to reach all three times, before settling down and blanking Miami over his final three innings. Mariners SS Jean Segura (hamstring) will be sent on a minor league rehab assignment, with the intention of rejoining the team in Oakland this weekend.
