Red Sox lose night after Pedroia injured by hard slide

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado attempting to break up the double play slid late and took out Pedroia's calf. Then, third baseman Manny Machado, who had injured Boston's Dustin Pedroia by sliding into his left knee two nights before, stepped in. He said after Friday's loss he wouldn't play "baseball police" when asked whether Machado should be disciplined by MLB for his slide.

"That's on them", Machado said.

Chicago hasn't scored in 23 innings, including during a three-hitter from Cleveland's Corey Kluber in a 3-0 Indians win Friday. Machado came up again in the eighth and Barnes' fastball whizzed behind Machado and hit his bat.

While hitting Machado after he sidelined Pedroia was a foregone conclusion - with it appearing as though Eduardo Rodriguez attempted to execute the act in the sixth inning - the pitch from Barnes was out of line.

"You never want to get hit in the head, intentionally or not, it don't matter".

"He was trying to take a four-seamer in and above his hands and the pitch got away from him", Farrell said.

"On a night when we're scuffling to put points on the board, that four-run inning looms large", Boston manager John Farrell said.

A huge part of Bundy's early season success has been due to the cutter, but he has also shown an impressive ability to get out of tough spots, something that evaded him previous year. "There was zero intention of (Machado) trying to hurt me".

"I don't have an issue with anything", he said. He just made a bad slide and did hurt me.

The Red Sox threatened in the second inning with one out and runners on the corners.

During Farrell's argument with Fletcher, Pedroia was standing on the top step in the dugout and caught Machado's attention. Regardless-don't be surprised if Machado gets hit with a pitch tonight.

"I had nothing to do with that".

"As a player that doesn't have the most service time in this room, when a guy like Adam Jones tells me to do something or not to do something, I'm going to do (what he says). It's not me. That's him".

"That's the beauty of this team", Mancini said.

The right-hander allowed four runs to his first four batters and ended with five runs allowed on eight hits in 5.1 innings.

Mitch Moreland also had a home run for the Red Sox, who came in with a major-league low eight home runs.

Diaz, who didn't start at shortstop due to back stiffness and a sore shoulder, homered leading off the seventh against reliever Carlos Torres (0-2). Over his three starts this year, Rodriguez has an 0-1 record, a 4.76 ERA and 14 Ks in 11.1 innings. Afterward, though, much of the talk centered around the heated series and whether there might be further retaliation when the team meet May 1-4 against Boston. But Britton isn't buying the All-Star's explanation, saying things wouldn't happen like that in the Orioles' clubhouse.

Red Sox: After an off day Monday, Boston opens a season-high, 10-game homestand Tuesday night in a matchup with the Yankees.

While Saturday's game went by without incident, Sunday's series finale was a different story.

Meanwhile, Bundy (3-1) was masterful for the second straight outing.
