Red Bull pins hopes on major upgrade in Spain

"I hope for a bit of a bullet - something fast", Ricciardo said.

Max Verstappen was left frustrated after issues with his rear tyres in Formula 1 qualifying for the Russian Grand Prix caused him to fall to seventh on the grid behind Williams' Felipe Massa.

Ferrari locked out the front row for the first time since the French Grand Prix in 2008, with Sebastian Vettel starting on pole ahead Kimi Raikkonen in second. Track position will be pretty important, and it should be a good race between Massa, Verstappen and myself - we all live in the same building in Monaco! Although the car's Renault power unit is not yet a match for Mercedes and Ferrari, Red Bull has made no secret of the struggles it has had with its chassis and aero package and is targeting a major overhaul in time for the next round in Spain. "Not expecting to have the battle for the win, I think that's between Ferrari and Mercedes, but we could have a nice little battle within ourselves for the top five".

"I'll use the word hope, not expect", Ricciardo stated.

Massa laughed before saying: "I hope I will win and I can not give!'" But then everyone would get the same, which is not the case.

"It was a bit like that past year, even with the ultra-soft sometimes we didn't really find any lap time, but then other times it kind of worked like there were a few qualifying with Monaco, Singapore, where if you can get it to work it happens". So that's what I would hope for, something that puts us in that fight. We've talked a bit about downforce, feeling a bit in the rear. But it just seems quite fragile, delicate, and we are still learning. And with the two sets in Q3 it got worse again. "It's not intentional - we obviously don't want it to be like that - [so] if Canada's as soon as it can come, then that's what it is".

"Fifth is our best qualifying result here in Russian Federation and we have to take the positives for now so I'm pleased to have achieved that for the team".
