Pence tells Netanyahu: US appreciates Israel's support for Syria strike

USA officials said Russia's military in Syria was informed of the strike beforehand in order to avoid casualties that could prompt a broader crisis. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), as well as California Democrats Rep. Ted Lieu and Rep. Barbara Lee (in addition to a handful of conservatives), Sanders added that Trump "must come to Congress to authorize any further use of force against the Assad regime". Obama failed and was weak - he drew a red line and then did nothing when Syria crossed it. "Congress must fully debate the Trump administration's military actions in Syria and set clear limits on the use of USA troops and military action in accord with our responsibilities under the Constitution".

Did Donald Trump break the law by striking Syria without congressional approval?

The Syrian military reported that the USA assault killed at least seven people and caused significant damage, according to the Associated Press.

"If there's anything we should've learned from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, in which the lives of thousands of fearless American men and women and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi and Afghan civilians have been lost and trillions of dollars spent", Sanders continued, "it's that it's easier to get into a war than get out of one".

The attack was focused at a government airbase, a location thought to be the source of a devastating chemical weapon attack which killed around 100 people in Idlib Province. And regardless of how good or compelling the reasons may be, a declaration of war is a Constitutional responsibility assigned to the Congress - not the President's alone.

Moreover, it seems very likely that putting pressure on Russia's top ally Iran may be next on the cards for Washington. That is a commonplace, and it is horrifyingly typical of internecine Muslim conflicts, which are happening throughout the region.

But will it change his thinking about Syrian refugees? There was still a glimmer of hope that the United States and the rest of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries would join with the region's Arab states in bringing Assad to heel and building a multi-ethnic Syria that respected religious pluralism.

Syria: What led to the USA airstrikes?

The death toll from the Syrian regime's chemical attack included at least 30 children and 20 women, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

In fact, it may be worse than pointless.

Before this week, Trump's approach to Syria boiled down to a few policies and talking points: Defeat ISIS. He has been wrong about this (Iran aside, al-Qaeda has extended its influence while ISIS grabs the headlines); but at least it was a strategy based on the reality that ISIS, more than Assad, posed a significant threat to attack the us and our allies. Accordingly, accommodations had been made with Russian Federation - particularly in sharing air space - in order to promote USA -led coalition attacks against ISIS.

In Khan Sheikhun, a rebel-held town in the northwestern province of Idlib, residents still mourning their dead welcomed the U.S. strike as a way to pressure Damascus. This may be what drove Mr Trump's right-wing supporters round the bend; the bombing of the airbase is exactly the kind of action that has marked "liberal interventionism" in the Middle East over the last 20 years.

"All responsibility, if military action occurred, will be on [the] shoulders of those who initiated such [a] doubtful and tragic enterprise", Safronkov said in response to reporters' questions. Russian officials have already denounced the attack as an act of "aggression" and promised to fix the damage. "We're hoping for more, and we're watching things very closely".

McMaster clarified that the strike will not cripple Assad's ability to use chemical weapons and is instead is meant to send a deterrent message.

Love said she is ready to work with Congress and the Trump administration to protect the nation from the rise of terrorism.

It immediately suspended a deal with the United States aimed at avoiding clashes in Syrian airspace.

And what is going to replace Assad?

The US national security team gets an update on the bin Laden mission, May 11, 2011.

The attack puts the hundreds of US troops stationed in Syria to assist in the fight agains ISIS at greater risk. "And President Trump has an equally profound and important obligation to present us with a clear plan of objectives for this escalation". That underlines the discrepancy in financial and material resources between the U.S. and Russian Federation.
