No positive shift yet on US-Russia ties

CNBC reported that earlier Wednesday, Putin said that U.S. -Russia relations have "deteriorated" since President Donald Trump took office, according to a transcript of an interview published by the Kremlin.

Putin and Trump are yet to meet face to face to discuss the tensions between Russian Federation and the US.

The news conference came after Russian president Putin met the top American diplomat for nearly two hours to see if they could rescue relations between the world's mightiest military powers.

"The world's two foremost nuclear powers can not have this sort of relationship".

As US secretary of state Rex Tillerson held extended meetings with both Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov and the country's president Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Mr Lavrov accused the US government of undertaking an "illegal attack against Syria" and criticised Washington's "confusing and sometimes openly contradictory ideas on the entire range of bilateral and worldwide issues".

Tillerson said that Russian Federation could help Assad "recognize this reality".

"Today, the president confirmed our readiness to return to its implementation on the understanding that the original aims of the air forces of the American coalition are reaffirmed, namely the fight with IS and al-Nusra", Lavrov said.

Russia, along with Iran, is Assad's key supporter in the six-year Syrian civil war against rebels supported by the United States and Turkey.

Steeped in geopolitical intrigue, the meeting between Mr Putin and Mr Tillerson was not formally confirmed until the last minute, following days of speculation about whether the Russian would refuse to grant the former oil executive an audience.

The strikes came after a chemical attack killed 89 people in the opposition-held Idlib Governorate.

The proposed resolution would have condemned the alleged attack and expressed the council's full backing to investigators from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

Later Wednesday, Russia blocked the U.N. Security Council's draft resolution condemning Syria and calling for it to comply with an investigation. "I think it's very bad for mankind", Trump said.

Russian Federation has staunchly backed Assad's government throughout Syria's six-year civil war.

In a blatant response to the alleged chemical attack, the USA launched dozens of Tomahawk to destro the Shayrat airfield in Syria.

"We are mindful of seriousness of that particular interference in our elections and i'm sure Russian Federation is mindful of it as well".

The meeting took place along with Lavrov and came after Lavrov issued Tillerson a warning against any further USA strikes on the Syrian regime. Lavrov also said Moscow was ready to revive an air safety agreement in Syria.
