Among the topics of discussion was the vexing problem of North Korea.

In a letter addressed to House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) and President Pro Tempore of the Senate Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Trump reiterated his statement Thursday night, after the strike was first announced, that is was carried out "in the vital national security and foreign policy interests of the United States". "But going it alone means going it with lots of other nations'".

The two leaders established US China Comprehensive Dialogue, elevating their dialogue status.

"Looking over Trump's remarks, he was able to say everything he wanted to and conveyed his thoughts clearly, without causing misunderstanding, to President Xi", Chun Yung-woo, a former presidential national security adviser and head of the Korean Peninsula Future Forum, told the JoongAng Ilbo on Sunday.

A full US Navy strike group, including the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, has been diverted from Australia to the Western Pacific, in what many are calling increased vigilance on the part of the US, as North Korea continues to test newer, and more deadly, weapons in the region. "I think, truly, progress has been made", he said, declaring the relationship "outstanding".

Xi reciprocated Trump's warm words, saying the summit had "uniquely important significance" and thanking Trump for a warm reception.

The two leaders agreed that their first meeting was "positive and fruitful", China's state-run Xinhua news agency said. Trump accepted, with a date yet to be determined.

Trump and Xi also established a new and cabinet-level framework for negotiations, he said.

Trump's grandson and granddaughter sang a traditional Chinese ballad - Jasmine Flower - and recited poetry for their honoured guests, according to Chinese state media.

A key test of whether the relationship can be salvaged comes next week when Secretary of State Rex Tillerson becomes the first Trump Cabinet member to visit Russian Federation. "All of us are feeling very good about the results of this summit".

As the two presidents went into their final lunch there were no specifics though, and in the aftermath of the US missile strike on Syria, all the big questions which bedevil the US China relationship have been kicked down the road for President Trump's visit to China later this year. This week, the US president diverted an aircraft carrier toward the seas off the divided Korean Peninsula to deter North Korea from conducting another nuclear or missile test.

Regarding the U.S. Navy strike force's arrival in the western Pacific, Lu said: "We hope all parties will refrain from irresponsible actions that would be very risky at the moment".

Trump asked Xi for ideas on how to proceed, but held out the possibility of unilateral action.

But Stavridis said that he felt it was the "best strategy" should the U.S.be forced to take military action.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani meanwhile said that "terrorists" were applauding Trump for launching a missile strike on an airbase of his Syrian government ally.

Much of the worldwide community rallied behind Trump's decision to fire the cruise missiles in reaction to this week's chemical weapons attack that killed dozens of men, women and children in Syria. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the attack claimed the lives of 84 people.

"Why have you attacked the Syrian army which is at war with terrorists?" Since January, his administration has been quietly reducing support for Syria's rebels, seemingly opening the door for an eventual settlement that might leave Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in charge.

But the cancellation, which came after discussions with U.S. secretary of state Rex Tillerson, led to him being criticised as "Washington's poodle". So far, I have gotten nothing.

The North called the airstrikes "absolutely unpardonable" and said they prove its nuclear weapons are justified to protect the country against Washington's "evermore reckless moves for a war". The North has been particularly aggressive in recent months, responding with hostility to U.S.

On trade there was agreement for a 100-day assessment of differences on economic issues.

To the surprise of no one, Trump spent much of Saturday on the golf course, under the Florida sun.

But Mr Xi is a "princeling", the son of a veteran Communist Party figure Xi Zhongxun who survived the turbulence of the nation's early years.
