Supreme Court acquitted National Award-winning filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar in 2012 after criminal charges filed on the basis of actress Preeti Jain's rape allegations were officially squashed.

The prosecution said Jain gave a contract to gangster Arun Gawli's aide Naresh Pardeshi to kill Bhandarkar in September 2005 nearly a year after she filed the rape case. However, they let him off after failing to find evidence. Jain reportedly asked for the money to be returned when the plan didn't work out.

Pradeshi and his aide Shivram Das procured weapons and prepared for the hit, but did not go through with it.

According to the prosecution, in 2005 Preeti paid Naresh Pardeshi an aide of gangster Arun Gawli Rs. 75,000 to kill Bhandarkar. They were caught when the conspiracy unravelled. This demand was escalated to gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli, who is now in jail, and he alerted the local police about the same. He said Jain had asked for a refund after the plot to kill Bhandarkar did not work.

Pardesi was arrested the same day and Jain was picked up while she was on her way to the Versova police station. Soon thereafter, the police reached Das as well who had arranged for the arms to kill the film maker.

November 2009: A special court in Mumbai directed commencement of trial in the case.
