And Mourinho clearly relished getting one over them at Old Trafford, delighting United fans by pointing to their badge as he walked into the tunnel.

Next up for Chelsea is a crucial FA Cup semi-final with Tottenham.

Rashford snatched at a shot when United got their first sight of goal, but coolly made amends soon after.

Mourinho felt United were dominant as Chelsea failed to register a shot on target in a league match for the first time since September 2007. Hazard barely had a meaningful touch.

"The performance was really very, very good and it is a pleasure for me to say that the [league] leaders - the leaders with some difference - could not cope with our performance".

Chelsea might be starting to wobble.

Meanwhile, in the other Sunday game played earlier, Liverpool defeated West Brom 1-0 at the Hawthorns.

The win extends fifth-placed United's unbeaten league run to 22 games and keeps them in the hunt for a Champions League spot with Mourinho seeing signs of progress from his squad.

Still, the pressure is certainly on the leaders now. Yes, four of Chelsea's final six are against top ten teams but they all sit in the lower half of the top ten. "The league is open and we have a 50 per cent probability to win the league".

United flew out of the blocks and Rashford, leading the line in place of exhausted top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic, turned home a fine seventh-minute opener.

For United boss Jose Mourinho, who made a decision to rest Zlatan Ibrahmovic, the result leaves his team just four points behind Manchester City in fourth with a game in hand and stretches their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 22 games - the longest current unbeaten run in Europe's top five leagues.

The Red Devils are four points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, with a trip to the Etihad Stadium on the horizon on April 27.

Chelsea were beaten by the better side this afternoon as Jose Mourinho got the better of his old team at Old Trafford.

Two minutes later, though, Herrera won the ball in midfield, possibly by using his hand, and delivered an inch-perfect pass into the path of Rashford who outpaced Luiz and fired low into the far corner of the net.

Herrera looked to have handled the ball in the build-up to that goal but he wasn't penalized. Young kept a Rashford free kick alive, and after Kurt Zouma tried clearing the ball, it fell to Herrera and his shot deflected off Zouma to give Manchester United a two-goal lead.

United left Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the bench following the Europa League draw at Anderlecht while Chelsea were without keeper Thibaut Courtois, who had an ankle injury, and Marcos Alonso, who had a hamstring problem in the warmup.

And, though it would be out of character for Chelsea suddenly to lose their nerve, perhaps United have shown the blueprint here when it comes to finding a way to negating the team.

Much of the pre-match buildup focused on Liverpool's issues in coping with set-pieces - a real strength of West Bromwich under Tony Pulis.
