Highest ranking woman in House disagrees on gender pay equity bill

The British government has introduced new rules aimed at eliminating a gender pay gap that sees men earn nearly a fifth more than women.

It took until April 4, 2017 for women in the United States to earn as much money as men had earned in 2016, if you start counting both at the beginning of past year.

Fun fact: the United States celebrated its Equal Pay Day yesterday but it was Iceland that made it law first.

It's 2017, and women are on average paid 20% less than men, wage reports say.

To draw awareness around that 20 percent less that women earn compared to men, Lean-In launched a new campaign Tuesday in which businesses nationwide, including over 30 in San Diego, offered a 20 percent discount.

"We're proud to shine a light on Missouri's gender wage gap because there shouldn't be any question about it - women deserve equal pay for equal work", stated Missouri Democratic Party Chair Stephen Webber. The significance of holding it on a Tuesday is to "represent how far into the next work week women must work to earn what men earned the previous week".

In Virginia, women working full-time are paid an average of 78 cents for every dollar paid to men.

"It's not just about the pay check inequality but it's the access to other assets that allow you to be able to thrive".

"Some have decried the "celebration" of this symbolic day ("'Happy Equal Pay Day, ' said No Woman Ever"). The stat that women earn 20% less "does not factor in numerous choices that women and men make-including education, years of experience and hours worked-that influence earnings". The number of working women living in poverty would be cut in half.

Firms will also be required to publish statistics covering pay gaps in bonuses paid out during the year. While white women have greatly narrowed the wage gap, "black women only narrowed that gap by 9 cents, from earning 56 cents for every dollar earned by a white man in 1980 to 65 cents today".
