Harry Redknapp: Birmingham City should be pushing for the Premier League

Steve Cotterill has been appointed as the assistant manager at Birmingham City after the club brought in Harry Redknapp as their new boss.

He has previously been in charge of Bournemouth, West Ham United, Portsmouth - where he won the FA Cup in 2008 - and Southampton.

Redknapp has three games remaining this season in which to preserve their status, starting with Monday's (AEST) derby showdown with Aston Villa.

The club announced the appointment just 16 hours after Zola left the club.

Redknapp, 70, took charge of Jordan for two World Cup qualifiers a year ago, and also worked as an advisor to Derby County last season. I'm not going to turn them into Real Madrid. "They're always hard, but I'm ready for it".

"I got a phone call last night at 7pm from the people of Birmingham", Redknapp told Talksport on Tuesday.

He said: "I haven't seen them play, I've got to be truthful".

Blues could be in the relegation zone by the time Redknapp takes charge of his first match. "It is three games in two weeks, massive games for us, it is a very hard situation we are in but I am looking forward to the challenge", Redknapp said on Wednesday.

After the Villa game, the Blues then host Huddersfield Town before finishing off the season away at relegation rivals Bristol City.

He took charge of Jordan for two World Cup qualifiers a year ago, and also worked as an advisor to Derby County last season. I am sorry because I came to Birmingham with huge expectations.

But the change of manager baffled many supporters - and results on the pitch have done nothing to win them over. "The club's position is not secure and they are frustrated and I can understand their feelings".

Gary Rowett's comments about his preparations at Derby County, could hardly be more different than Harry Redknapp's after taking over at Birmingham City. "Wigan and Blackburn have still got a big chance, so we're going to need some points from somewhere, starting if we can on Sunday".
