There were more protests against long-serving manager Arsene Wenger - with some Gunners fans not taking their seats until the 13th minute.

Earning all three points moves the side past Manchester United into fifth place and within four points of Manchester City for the final Champions League berth with a match in hand.

And the supporters took great delight in sending them back down to what seems to be their favourite spot in the league.

Arsenal squandered a number of chances before Ozil's goal, a curling shot from outside the area that may have been meant as a cross for the streaking Alexis Sanchez but found its way inside the far post.

Arsenal's English striker Danny Welbeck (2nd L) has an unsuccessful shot during the English Premier League football match between Arsenal and West Ham United at the Emirates Stadium in London on April 5, 2017. We have a little handicap on the points front. They proved a point to their critics, despite a hard first half, beating a struggling Hammers side without a win in seven and on the back of a five-match losing run.

West Ham have not won a game in more than two months and have Tottenham to thank for them not being dragged closer into the relegation zone.

"Of course we are [in a relegation battle]".

Germany worldwide Ozil - making his 150th Arsenal appearance - has come under fire for lacklustre displays this season and the ire aimed in his direction increased during a run the Gunners took into Wednesday's game that had seen them win just three times in their last 10 matches in all competitions. "It's not being negative, it's being realistic", Bilic confirmed after the Arsenal match. "We were convincing after the break", he told BBC Sport.

We are in a fight to keep our Premier League status.

"It is the key point for me to get that confidence back before Saturday".

Wenger hailed the win as a "relief" after one of the worst spells of his career, and acknowledged that it could lift some of the pressure off Ozil's shoulders as well.

"We started the game good, we were very good in the first half an hour", Bilic said. "Three points at this stage of the season are massive".
