The boy was dining at the popular rotating eatery, located in downtown Atlanta atop the Westin hotel, with his parents when he wandered away from the table.

A young boy has died after he reportedly got his head stuck in the rotation at the Sun Dial restaurant atop the Westin Peachtree Plaza, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution reports.

Authorities said the family was visiting Atlanta from Charlotte. "Somehow he found himself in a critical situation where he was lost between the rotating floor and the wall", an Atlanta police spokesman told WGCL-TV.

"What we do know is that people in the restaurant, everyone ran to the child's aid".

As soon as the boy got stuck, the restaurant's employees jumped into action and tried to save him, WBTV reports.

First responders were at the restaurant in a matter of minutes.

A child has died after sustaining a head injury at the Sun Dial Restaurant.

Pickard said he did not want to comment on whether anything like this has ever happened before.

The rotating floor automatically shut off, and an ambulance was called, but it was too late.

Officials said the child was bleeding from the head.

The restaurant will remain closed for the weekend.

Westin Hotel manager George Reed said investigations into the "tragic accident" were ongoing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
