Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (R) meets with Jason Greenblatt, Donald Trump's special representative for global negotiations at the Prime Minister's Office in Jerusalem, March 13, 2017. Amona was illegal, even under Israeli law; all Israeli settlements are illegal under global law.

On the issue of the settlements, she added: "I am very concerned about developments in the West Bank, which are leading to an erosion of the basis for a two-state solution".

"The issues the two delegations discussed are exceptionally complicated, and the fact that both governments dedicated such senior delegations for almost a full week of talks reflects the close cooperation between the two countries and the importance both assign to this vital task", the joint statement read.

Israeli construction of illegal settlement homes in the occupied West Bank rose by 40 percent in 2016 compared with the previous year, official figures showed Wednesday.

That figures excluded East Jerusalem, also occupied in 1967 and later annexed.

"I was heading to work in my truck, which was parked in the Ministry of Interior's parking lot in Wadi Joz as usual this morning, when I was surprised by an Israeli special force officer who headed towards me and asked me: 'Why did you hit my car?'" Shweiki recounted.

Germany has reiterated its long-held support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and rejected Israeli settlements.

A senior Israeli official on Thursday denied reports that President Donald Trump's administration has called on Israel to restrict construction in Judea and Samaria.

Before meeting Abbas on Friday, Merkel warned Palestinians that if they wanted peace it was wrong to condemn Israel within global bodies.

The talks come after Greenblatt's visit to the region last week, which featured two long meetings with Netanyahu and a meeting with Palestinian leaders.
