"We will now be concentrating on our new movement".

'Apparently, my comments about the party being run like a squash club committee and Mr Carswell have not gone down well.

He warned that the party has been "thrashing around" for goal since the Brexit result last June which has seen support for Ukip drop.

The UK Independence Party has rejected claims by one of its biggest donors that he has been suspended from the party membership.

"It isn't possible to suspend Mr Banks from a party where he isn't a member".

A spokesman for Ukip claimed that Banks's membership "lapsed at the beginning of the year", but was unable to clarify if he had been suspended.

A new week, a new drama for Ukip.

The figures come in the wake of Nuttall's failure to win the Stoke-on-Trent Central by-election in February and as the party faces new in-fighting.

A Ukip spokesman said: "Mr Banks was notified past year that his membership was due for renewal at the start of October but chose not to renew despite reminders. Interesting times lie ahead..."

'I now realise that I was being unfair to squash clubs all over the United Kingdom and I apologise to them.

Asked why, he replied: "Apparently for saying the current leadership couldn't knock the skin off a rice pudding".

However, a UKIP spokesman said Mr Banks was notified past year that his membership was due for renewal at the start of October but he "chose not to renew despite reminders".

The businessman, who gave UKIP £1 million (US$1.21 million at current rates) ahead of the 2015 general election, set tongues wagging when he tweeted that his membership had been suspended on Tuesday morning.

He recently said he would stop his donations to the cash-strapped party unless he was made party chairman and allowed to conduct a "purge" of members.

Although Nigel Farage last month called for Douglas Carswell to be kicked out of the party for disloyalty over a knighthood, it's Farage's righthand man Arron Banks who has today been left out in the cold.
