'The Handmaid's Tale' trailer takes us to a bleak post-America future

The 10-episode series, which debuts on Hulu on April 26, takes place in a dystopia called Gilead - a totalitarian society, once the US, rooted in twisted religious fundamentalism. "When they slaughtered Congress, we didn't wake up", she continues as viewers glimpse scenes from the events she's describing.

Hulu has released the first full trailer of "The Handmaid's Tale" for viewing pleasure, AceShowbiz said. Samira Wiley, of "Orange is the New Black", and Alexis Bledel, of "The Gilmore Girls", also don the handmaids' signature red robes and white bonnets. "When they blamed terrorists and suspended the Constitution, we didn't wake up then either". It explores the lives of women in a totalitarian society, who are forced to bear children and how they finally overcome the same system.

Atwood's book, like George Orwell's 1984, garnered renewed attention around the 2016 presidential election. Joseph Fiennes, whom I once loved very deeply for Shakespeare in Love, plays the high-ranked Commander who keeps her. Among all the dark imagery, it features a glance into how a religious fundamentalist group came into power in what used to be the United States.

What show are you most looking forward to? When she questions his statement, he adds: "Better never means better for everyone".

If you're thinking of reading the book to prepare yourself for the series, I've got some bad news: even Margaret Atwood freaked out when she saw the show (she still thought it was great though).
