Southern Illinois Death Reported from Tuesday Evening Tornadoes

At Ottawa, Illinois, state Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Patti Thompson says the tornado victim was killed by an uprooted tree.

In Perryville the storms flipped cars over along a highway and ripped down trees and power lines, according to local media.

According to the the National Weather Service, 22 twisters touched down in Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Tennessee and Iowa.

A nursing home in La Salle County, Illinois, also suffered damage from the storms but reported their residents were all accounted for and safe.

A spokesperson with the Missouri State Highway Patrol said the highway was closed in both directions due to the damage. People were dislocated due to multiple tornadoes and majority had to seek shelter at the nearby schools. Officials on the ground says that his home was destroyed.

More than 100,000 people awoke without power on Wednesday, as emergency crews struggle to fix downed power lines under the threat of more storms.

Two deaths have been confirmed as the result of an EF-3 tornado ripping through LaSalle County around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday.

50 out of the 200 homes in the small village of Naplate, Illinois are destroyed. The Ameren Illinois power company said more than 12,500 without power early Wednesday in that state, while Ameren Missouri said 11,600 customers were affected. The storm system first hit the Midwest late Tuesday night and then hit the South today.

A tornado that touched down in Ottawa has claimed another life. Photos shared online showed a funnel cloud in the sky.

On Tuesday night, almost 45 million Americans were hit by the severe weather which poured rain and hail on states between Arkansas and Ohio.

The Storm Prediction Center had warned that some of Tuesday's storms would track over long distances.

"Widespread damaging winds can be expected, along with some tornado risk", the service said in an advisory.
