'Sad' Oscars Messed Up After Joking Too Much About Politics

One surprise victor from Sunday night's Oscars ceremony was nowhere near the Dolby Theatre - and slumbering away in what we can only assume are exquisitely tailored matching pajamas. The "In Memoriam" segment included the photo of someone who's still alive, and in January, when the Academy Awards were announced, Amy Adams was listed instead of Ruth Negga in the Best Actress category on the Oscars mobile site. "I wasn't trying to be amusing", Beatty said. Beatty opened the envelope, looked to co-presenter Dunaway, then appeared to struggle with the announcement.

The duo was there to present the best picture award in celebration of the 50th anniversary of their classic film, Bonnie and Clyde.

Horowitz added: "This is not a joke, Moonlight has won best picture".

"I blame myself", Jimmy Kimmel, who hosted the 89th annual Academy Awards, joked to the crowd. "I'm afraid they read the wrong thing". Moments before he handed out the wrong envelope, Cullinan tweeted a behind-the-scenes photo of victor Emma Stone holding her just awarded statuette saying "Best Actress Emma Stone backstage!" The elated La La Land team went up on stage, and the presenters handed them the award in spite of realising that they had made a blunder. "Personally I blame Steve Harvey for this", Kimmel said, referencing the moment Harvey fluffed the announcement of 2015's Miss Universe pageant victor. Damien Chazelle also won Best Director for "La La Land" making him the youngest director to win the award at age 32. Beatty explained that he was handed the wrong card, which read "Emma Stone - La La Land", and that he wasn't trying to be amusing when he hesitated and then gave it to Dunaway to read.

Moonlight's director Barry Jenkins took to Twitter the day after the ceremony to voice his thanks for Horowitz's actions, offering "much respect to that dude". "I'm done with it because this is true".

"And then I just thought, Oh, my God, how does this happen? How".

Well, we obviously can't tell you for certain what happened on the night, but this piece of information might be useful to quash some of the rumours.

Emma Stone won Best Actress for her role in La La Land, while Manchester by the Sea's Casey Affleck was named Best Actor.
