Justice Walter Onnoghen is now facing the senate as hearing has commenced to confirm him as Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Justice Walter Onnoghen is now introducing himself as he prepares to take questions from the Senators.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki on resumption of plenary after a four-week recess read a letter from the presidency dated February 7, 2017 praying the Senate to confirm Justice Onnoghen as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) pursuant to Section 231 of the 1999 federal constitution as amended.

The Senate procedure says that the lawmakers can refer the nomination of anybody to its relevant committees and in this case, the Committee on Judiciary, for screening and await its report before going ahead with the confirmation during plenary.

His name was forwarded for screening by Acting President Osinbajo two weeks ago.

We therefore urge the Senate to, without further hesitation, confirm Justice Onnoghen as the substantive CJN so as to put a final seal on the matter.

The Nigerian Senate has began the screening of Walter Onnoghen as the Chef Justice of Nigeria.

He has been leading the country's judiciary in acting capacity since November 10 when he was so appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari, following the retirement of Mahmud Mohammed.

Onnoghen is the most senior judicial office having about seven more years in service.

But the National Judicial Council (NJC), which had nominated Onnoghen for the position, re-nominated him on February 9 - a day before the expiration of his three-month tenure.
