Meanwhile, South Korea's Defense Ministry warned the north made "meaningful progress" in learning how to successfully launch a guided ballistic missile Sunday, though further research would be needed to determine what the latest launch test meant for the nation's nuclear operations.

Trump's remarks came as US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson wrapped up his Asia tour consisting of stops in Tokyo, Seoul and Beijing.

"The test was carried out with the goal of confirming all the technical indicators related to the engine, including the characteristics of the propulsion in the blast chamber; the operational accuracy of the turbine pump apparatus, the control system and various other factors; and the engine's structural stability and reliability", the newspaper said in its explanation of the test objectives.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un observed the test of a new high-thrust engine at dawn at the Sohae satellite launching pad, the state-run Korean Central News Agency reported. He told Reuters: "This was a comprehensive test for the first-stage rocket for an ICBM, and that is why it was risky". Mr Lee Jin-woo, a spokesman at the Defence Ministry, said it showed that the North was developing a more sophisticated rocket engine. It might though soon be able to demonstrate that it had perfected an ICBM system's booster rocket stage.

Officials from China and the USA have vowed to work together to push North Korea towards "a different course" amid increased fears over the despot state's weapons programmes.

Khalid said the new suspects are in addition to the seven North Koreans already being sought in last month‚à "ôs poisoning death of Kim Jong Nam".

The last ground test of a high-powered rocket engine was in September a year ago, which was also observed by Mr. Kim.

North Korea's latest rocket engine test showed "meaningful progress" in its missile capabilities, Seoul said today, as the nuclear-armed state steps up its controversial weapons development programmes.

The device the North tested included a main engine and four vernier thrusters for stability purposes.

There has been no indication whether Saturday's test was timed to coincide with Tillerson's visit, but North Korea has been highly critical of ongoing U.S. North Korea's angry denunciations of the probe over the past several weeks have caused its ties with Malaysia to strain to the breaking point.

Experts say space rockets and long-range missiles involve fundamentally identical technologies, but with different configurations for trajectory and velocity for the stages. He said the situation was at a new cross-roads with two scenarios - a deterioration to war or a diplomatic solution.
