The world number one had been set to play at the tournament after a disappointing second-round exit at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells last week.

There has been no official word from Djokovic on his status for the upcoming tournament. "Apologies to the fans, it's one of my favorite tournaments".

Highlights of the match between Andy Murray and Vasek Pospisil from Indian Wells. "The focus is now on getting ready for the clay season", Murray said in a statement, which even took his own team by surprise, reports the Guardian. It was a much-needed return to form for the 28-year-old after back and shoulder problems hindered him late in the 2014 season.

According to French newspaper Le Parisien, Djokovic is also a doubt for Miami, also due to a right elbow injury.

Djokovic has won five of the past six Miami titles including the past three.

The men's singles at the Miami tournament begins on Wednesday, with the event running until April 2.
